He outed Ferrari and warned us that the mags will cooperate to present the appearance of normalcy. Jeez, I'm the furthest thing from a conspiracy theorist, but this stuff is just too obvious. Just sub in exotic and EXPENSIVE alloy parts and save weight.

These mods easily account for lap time improvement over 458 roid car version 1 that went around at release. Wet weather performance in fact improves with stickier rubber. NONE of these things compromise the tuned 458 press car's performance on regular road test. It's the rest of us that need to open our eyes. Any manufacturer, let alone an F1 constructor, can do these things with their eyes closed. Okay that's a cheap shot but the pattern is the same. Not for customers, though, engine bays already on fire. Recalibrate the tach to show OEM 9000 RPM when really it is 10,000. Lastly, let the engine wind up another 500-1000 RPM, as per the 360 test car Harris talks about. Again engineered to perform but not last - how convenient since Ferrari gets the press car back in between mag tests. High wear pads would have more bite, especially if disks are bigger and of similarly compromised compound. Also a 10% increase in braking ability would have a significant effect on lap times. If you have track experience, you know tires are the biggest single factor for lap time. No, you would not be able to tell the difference visually, but even if you could it is IRRELEVANT, as you are not allowed to say. Ferrari would not put these tires on customer cars because they would last a few thousand km. They constantly supply test compounds and besides it is to their benefit. Tire manufacturer would supply them no problem, why wouldn't they.

I have to agree timing improvement if it is as you say for 458 compared to previous tests is odd and does need to be explained - don't just shoot me down but 458 has been out 12 months plus, have any advances been made in eDiff software that would at least explain some of the improvement - are all 458's now faster on track? Are tyres improved over original test car tyres, I seem to remember tyres being discussed on forums as being uprated on 2011 cars.įerrari did the same thing with the Scud press car- super sticky tires. They need to make this tyre available to the public! With regards to tyres, is the assumption you are making that Pirelli has produced a special batch of tyres that have all the markings of a standard tyre but is actually a totally different compound? Again, even if they did this (I doubt it very much) then again seems like a great tyre that works so well in a 5 day test on wet, dry, bumpy, gritty roads and doesn't wear out - then goes to track and performs perfectly. I've never driven a track specified car but my assumption is that they are pretty compromised on the road - to be indistinguishable from a standard 458 on normal roads seems pretty good going to say the least. My point is that the 458 would seem to be able to do this track time with all this mechanical grip without being compromised on the road for 5 days and 6 drivers. whatever!Ĭlick to expand.I don't disagree with the conclusion that the answer is mechanical grip. A 458 that is faster than a GT2 RS and Apollo S.

I may be one person, but I have my own free will. So, Ferrari bean counters, if you are listening, debit your future cash account several hundred thousand dollars and the matching credit goes to McLaren and your other competitors.

I, however, will never buy a new Ferrari as long as this is the case. Ferrari may gain a few customers from McLaren and the rest by perpetuating this fallacy. Thank God for the Internet or we'd have no choice but to sit here and eat this BS without a voice. If it is faster than the Porsche, I'm over the moon. If the luxury version 12C is as fast as the lightweight GT2RS, that is amazing.

Why wouldn't it be? If the 12C is faster, then there was some other variable or the EVO driver is not consistent.Īny Ferrari press car is assumed as a cheat and therefore its lap times are not relevant, no matter how fast or slow.

I fully expect it to be faster than the 12C in the CAR review. Same press 458 on roids as the rest of the mags. Click to expand.Ben Collins in this capacity is a journalist for CAR, not an independent tester with a customer-spec car.
